Focal Passage: Joshua 24:14-24
Making decisions is a part of everyday life. We make small decisions about what to wear, what to eat, and where to go. Most of those choices have little long-term impact. Then there are the decisions that shape the course of our lives.
Can you remember some of the most significant decisions you have made? Looking back, I can identify several moments that changed the direction of my life. After high school, I had to decide which university I would attend. A few years later, I made the best decision of my life when I asked my wife to marry me. Those decisions shaped my future in ways I could never have imagined. We often forget the small decisions of everyday life, but we vividly remember the vital ones because they leave a lasting impact.
Joshua brings the people of Israel to one of those defining moments.
His life is coming to an end. In fact, at the close of this chapter we learn that Joshua dies at the age of 110. These are among his final words to the nation, and he calls them to make a vital decision.
Joshua first commands the people to “fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth” (v. 14).
To fear the Lord means to honor, revere, and stand in awe of Him. It is recognizing that He alone is God and deserves our highest devotion. Joshua also commands the people to serve the Lord.
This word carries the idea of worship, allegiance, and faithful obedience. Joshua is calling Israel to reject every false god and to give their wholehearted devotion to Yahweh alone.
Then Joshua issues one of the most famous challenges in all of Scripture: “Choose this day whom you will serve” (v. 15).
Israel had a decision to make. Would they worship the Lord who had delivered them from Egypt, provided for them in the wilderness, and given them the Promised Land? Or would they return to the false gods worshiped by the surrounding nations?
That same decision confronts every generation.
While most of us do not bow before carved idols, we are still tempted to give our hearts to things that compete with God. Success, money, comfort, relationships, sports, careers, and even good gifts can become idols when they occupy the place that belongs to God alone.
Take a moment to honestly evaluate your own life. What captures your greatest affection? What receives your time, your attention, and your trust? What do your priorities reveal about what you truly worship?
Joshua had already made his decision. He boldly declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” In the midst of a culture tempted by idolatry, Joshua publicly committed himself and his household to faithful obedience to Yahweh.
What might happen if every believer made that same commitment today? Imagine the impact if every church, every family, and every home determined that they would honor Christ above everything else.
Today, you have a vital decision to make. Choose to worship and serve the Lord with wholehearted devotion. It is a decision that will not only shape your life but also influence the generations that follow. B&R
