Prayer matters because it mattered to Jesus, and scripture reminds us that we are to follow Jesus Christ—to imitate Him. In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul urges, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” We are to adopt the attitudes and behaviors exemplified by Jesus. Philippians 2:5–8 instructs believers to develop the same mindset as Christ.
Jesus prayed publicly, privately, in great anguish, in celebration and joy, for himself and for others. We can safely say that Jesus prayed about all things and at all times. Jesus prayed with intention, passion, and focus while on earth, and He continues to do so now, as He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us.
Simply put, prayer matters because it mattered—and matters, today—to Jesus, and is what drives our spiritual growth. Let us adopt Philippians 4:6–7 for our own lives.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.”
